On 24 November 2025, the Department of Home Affairs officially launched the Home Affairs Citizenship Reinstatement Portal. Under Section 6(1)(a) of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995, South Africans who voluntarily acquired citizenship of another country as adults, without first applying for Ministerial retention permission, automatically lost their South African citizenship.

On 6 May 2025, the Constitutional Court of South Africa unanimously declared that provision unconstitutional, ruling that the automatic stripping of citizenship violated the right to citizenship under the constitution. The verdict effectively meant that individuals affected since 6 October 1995 should be considered as having never lost their South African citizenship.

• Create a secure profile and confirm their email address.
• Enter their South African ID number to check whether their citizenship is still valid, or whether it was lost under Section 6(1)(a).
• Use biometric verification, including facial recognition and document upload, to confirm identity.
• If needed, submit a reinstatement application, without having to visit a branch or submit paper forms.
• Track the progress of their application through the portal’s user interface, once submitted.
