General Work Visa

General Work Visa

South Africa’s General Work Visa allows foreign nationals to live and work in the country. It’s meant for individuals with skills or experience that are hard to find locally. This visa also helps employers fill critical roles when no suitable South African candidates are available. Recent changes, including the introduction of a new points-based system, have made the application process more detailed and technical.

Visa Requirements of the General Work Visa

To qualify, the applicant must have a job offer from a South African employer. Applicants must then achieve a minimum of 100 points under the points-based system introduced by the Department of Home Affairs.

The points-based system evaluates several factors, including the level of education, years of work experience and the salary on offer. Points are also awarded if the employment offer is from an employer on the Trusted Employer Scheme. Should the applicant be proficient in at least one official South African language, a further ten points can be earned.

If the occupation is on the critical skills list, the 100 points are automatically reached, and in such a case, the applicant can qualify for the Critical Skills Visa. Your SA Visa Link consultant will advise in such circumstances.

All foreign qualifications must be assessed by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to confirm that they meet local standards. The applicant is also required to undergo a medical examination and provide police clearance certificates from every country where they have lived for 12 months or more in the past five years.

SA Visa Link will be able to evaluate your unique circumstances and assist both the employer and employee in the application process.

Benefits of the General Work Visa

The General Work Visa can be valid for up to five years, depending on the duration of the employment contract. During this time, the visa holder is legally entitled to live and work in South Africa. This provides the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience in a dynamic and diverse economy. South Africa’s labour market spans a range of sectors, including finance, engineering, healthcare, information technology, and specialised trades, many of which are actively seeking skilled foreign workers. In addition to competitive salaries in certain industries, foreign workers often benefit from a lower cost of living compared to other global markets.

Importantly, the General Work Visa can also pave the way for long-term settlement. If the visa holder remains employed and compliant with visa conditions, they may become eligible to apply for permanent residency after five years. This provides long-term security and access to additional benefits, such as property ownership, business opportunities, and more flexible travel. The visa also allows dependents, your spouse and children, to accompany you, making it a viable option for families looking to relocate and build a life in South Africa.

Overall, the General Work Visa offers more than just the right to work. It provides a legal, structured pathway to professional and personal growth in one of Africa’s most economically developed countries.
